CVE-2022-22965
Critical 9.8 Exploited
In plain English
A critical-severity code injection in Spring Framework. Attackers are actively exploiting it in the wild (listed by CISA on April 4, 2022). The chance it is exploited in the next 30 days is estimated at 99.6% (higher than 99.9% of all known vulnerabilities). Ready-made attack tooling exists: Metasploit, Nuclei, public proof-of-concept code. Fixed versions are available - upgrade the affected package.
CISA guidance
Apply updates per vendor instructions.
Federal agencies must remediate by Apr 25, 2022.
Official description
A Spring MVC or Spring WebFlux application running on JDK 9+ may be vulnerable to remote code execution (RCE) via data binding. The specific exploit requires the application to run on Tomcat as a WAR deployment. If the application is deployed as a Spring Boot executable jar, i.e. the default, it is not vulnerable to the exploit. However, the nature of the vulnerability is more general, and there may be other ways to exploit it.
